An old and endangered indigenous variety of southeastern Slovenia and the western part of Bregovita Hrvatska, žuti (yellow) plavec (blue) in Croatian, and rumeni (yelow again) in Slovenian. Thanks to its pronounced freshness and innate elegance, it shows exceptional potential for the production of sparkling wines, whether monovarietal or in blends. This was demonstrated by the promenade tasting at the Hotel Esplanade in Zagreb, where wines made from or with žuti plavec were presented by 12 wineries from Slovenia, Serbia and Croatia: Istenič, Klet Krško, Mihelin, Jelenič, Pinterič, Berkovič, Sagmeister, Dular, Tomac, Jagunić, Coletti and Šember.
After a two-hour tasting, wines made from or with Žuti Plavec were presented at a special workshop by Caroline Gilby, a British Master of Wine, and Saša Špiranec. The tasting and accompanying wine presentation were held as part of the RumeniŽuti project, co-financed by the European Union and part of the Interreg Slovenia–Croatia program.
